Proclamation Day 15th March 2016 Scoil Bhríde

As part of the Ireland 2016 commemorative programme, The Department of Education and Skills has asked schools to reflect upon the events of 100 years ago.

On Tuesday 15th March we celebrate Proclamation Day in Scoil Bhride, Kill. The children have been busy preparing commemorative songs of 1916 such as ‘The Foggy Dew’ and ‘Grace’, playing tin whistle and singing old Irish favourites like Oró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile and Juniors to Sixth have been learning Ámhrán na bhFiann.

On Tuesday. some of our expert orators from Ms. Farry’s 5th class will read The 1916 Proclamation. This Proclamation will be signed by seven signatories from Mr. Gallagher’s 5th class who have researched each signatory in detail. They will share this information with all of the children, dressed as 1916 leaders of the rising and speaking their individual stories.

The life of Joseph Mary Plunkett has been further investigated by Ms. Fitzgerald’s 5th class and they will tell his story and perform the beautiful song ‘Grace’ giving an account of their wedding on the eve of Plunkett’s execution.

Ms. Kealey’s and Ms. Leahy’s 6th classes have been busy re-interpreting and creating our own ‘Proclamation for a New Generation’, sharing their vision for a modern Ireland, which embraces people from many nations and cultures. They will unveil this modern proclamation on Tuesday .and it will be signed by the members of our new Student Council in Scoil Bhríde.

The ceremony will take place in the school hall and then at this stage a member of each class level will escort The Irish Tricolour (which was presented to us earlier this year by the Irish Army) out to the flag pole at approx.12 noon. The flag will be raised with the help of children from 6th class and Junior Infants, symbolising the unity and comradeship promoted in our school. Together the whole school will then reflect on the flag and show our respect for the tricolour by singing Ámhrán na bhFiann.

Best Wishes,
